Meditation is synonymous with someone sitting in a cross-legged position with closed eyes, but, surprisingly, we can meditate anywhere, anytime, and in any position—sitting on the couch, bed, or even the chair, or even with your legs stretched out. A Buddhist technique, meditation has a whole world beyond its religious references with the primary goal of helping people achieve the 'non-thinking' mode.
At the theatre, inside the auditorium, or even while reading our favorite novel, our focus never stays in the action that we do, but keeps wandering here and there. It's surprising that we never relish the present but keep planning for the future or thinking about the past that's not in our hands! Practicing the art of mindfulness meditation prepares our mind and body to get rid of all unrelated thoughts, and simply exist in the present. Be here, be present, be yourself!
Appreciating the Power of Meditation
Ok. How can sitting quietly for a full 10-minute do amazing things that aren't possible through our sincere efforts? The action doesn't help you achieve greatness but acts as a powerful tool that helps perform your day-to-activities in a much better way, appreciate the little things in life, create happiness, and develop cognitive skills.
Sit down in a quiet place, close your eyes, concentrate on your breathing, and repeat any word (if you wish) every time you exhale to light up the magic of meditation. No Abracadabra or any magic spells cast, but the message is obvious—meditation has scientific benefits that are proved beyond doubt, and in fact, medical professionals are prescribing practicing the art of mindfulness meditation to delude depression, stress, and promote other physiological benefits such as lower blood pressure, oxygen consumption, heart rate, adrenaline levels, and stress hormone levels.
We all live but how we live is what matters! Meditation mediates better quality of life across all generations—in the young, it dissipates suicidal thoughts, frustrations, and stress due to profound competition with peers; in middle-aged individuals, meditation improves mood, well-being, and prepares you to tackle stressful situations at both, workplace and residence with determination and patience; and in the elderly people, it enhances your tolerance to pain levels, sublimes your reaction, preserves brain functionality, and delays cognitive decline.
Recent research shows that meditation has the power to change gene expressions in the brain, promoting positive emotions and negating negative thoughts.
Mute Mind Contradictions with Meditation
So, rather than contemplating whether or not we must meditate, it is wise to experiment with different techniques and choose the right one that showers us with peace. Don't force yourself to perform meditation, rather use it as a powerful force to achieve wellness and physical and mental health.
